From The Mind of Andrew B

With Andrew B

Welcome everyone to another edition of From the Mind of Andrew B where we will look at WrestleMania from this past Sunday. We will look at the shocks from Mania such as the end of Taker vs. Lesnar. Plus we will look at a once in a lifetime moment that opened the show. Was Bray Wyatt able to defeat John Cena? Did AJ Lee retain her title against 14 different Divas? Did Triple H finally end the Yes Movement? Who is the WWE World Heavyweight Champion? Did Brock Lesnar end the Streak of the Undertaker? Did Kane & the New Age Outlaws defeat The Shield? What did Hulk Hogan do as host of WrestleMania & what other legends were there? Who won the first ever Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal? The answer these questions & so much more is in the article so just keep on reading.

The way the show opened up was amazing. Never did I ever think I would see Stone Cold in the ring with Hulk Hogan but to see both of them with the Rock was a true once in a lifetime moment. It was a great way to open the event & in my mind the greatest promo to ever open up a PPV. The best was when Hogan got booed for calling it the Silver dome & then Rock & Austin mocked him for it. The end when all 3 did there catchphrases & drank there beers was great. With Hogan & Rock as host of Mania already I would love to see Austin host 32 in Dallas. For those wondering Hogan did eventually call it the Superdome. It was a great way to start the show & was the first of many shocks throughout the night.

The opening match of the night saw Daniel Bryan battle Triple H for the first time ever. The video package about Bryan before the match was amazing & the entrance HHH had was awesome. Stephanie looked hot in her shorts also. Bryan’s entrance was great as the view of 70,000 people saying yes was great. As for the match it was great as HHH showed what a ring general he is as he spent most of the match working on the injured arm on Bryan. The most amazing thing was seeing Bryan kick out of the pedigree as I thought that was the end. In the end Bryan was able to reserve a pedigree & win with the running knee after 26 minutes. After the match HHH attacked Bryan which actually was great for the story they would tell later in the show. As for a rating I would give this match **** out of 5 & I would call it the best match to open Mania since the MITB at Mania 25.

The next bout on the card was a 6 man tag featuring the Shield against Kane & the New Age Outlaws. This match was a little disappointing as it was only about 3 minutes long. In fact all the entrances were longer than the match I believe. It was pretty much a squash but it had cool moments like the double dive by Ambrose & Rollins & the end which saw a double triple power bomb on Gunn & Road Dogg. As for a rating it’s hard to give it one but I would say about * ½ out of 5 because it was entertaining & there were cool moments in the match.

After the match there was a legends backstage segment with Hacksaw & Sgt Slaughter. They were playing Slam City when Ted Dibiase comes in & does his everyone have a price & laughs which leads to Ron Simmons saying DAMN!! It was fun for what it was worth. It was cool seeing the legends & hearing the catchphrases of Dibiase & Simmons. It was also used to get the guys in the ring for the battle royal.

The battle royal was next on the card & the only entrances were for Sheamus & Big Show. The final 3 spots were Yoshi Tatsu, David Otunga & Cesaro. Tyson Kidd was also in it to replace Christian. 3MB did well as they eliminated Khali before Mark Henry took them all out. Brad Maddox & Yoshi Tatsu was the first 2 eliminated. Cesaro hit a great spin on Kofi during the match. The crowd was singing the theme of Fandango which he liked. The move of the match was when Cesaro was in the corner & Kofi charged he & Cesaro throw him over the ring post & Kofi landed lying down but with his toes on the steps. Also the move where Sheamus chops the chest of his opponent he did that 30 times to Fandango. The final 2 were Show & Cesaro & I personally though that like the Rumble the person who the crowd wanted to win (Cesaro in this case) would lose. In the end Cesaro picked up Show for a body slam & threw him over the top rope which was an amazing feat of strength to win after 13 minutes. I would give it ** ¼ as it had cool spots in the end but the beginning was just clearing the ring.

The John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt was next & the entrance for the Wyatt Family was amazing as they had a voodoo dancer & a live band wearing animal mask sing their theme. The crowd was 95% behind Wyatt as they clapped his theme & swayed back & forth during the entrance. During the match they sang the theme & cheered for everything the Wyatt Family did. The match was good but weird as the story was trying to get Cena to unleash his anger I think. Wyatt told Cena to end him with a chair & pin him multiple times. A highlight of the match was when Cena went for 5 Knuckle Shuffle & Bray popped up like a crab. Cena did everything to put on a show stealing performance from the way he presented himself to spearing Harper through the barricade. A cool moment by Cena was when he went for a leg drop off the top rope but instead did a dive on the outside on top of Rowan & Harper. A huge shocked during the match was that Wyatt kicked out of the AA. In the end Cena won this 22 minute bout with an AA. The match was good & it showed that the future is bright for Bray Wyatt. I would give this match a *** ½ out of 5 as it was a good match that told a good story.

After that we got the Hall of Fame class. This year the class was pretty good but not great. I like people in there such as Lita & Razor while Jake the Snake had a great career & an even greater personal life story. I am not a huge fan of the Warrior but he had a big impact on the WWF I guess. Paul Bearer is a top 5 manager in the history of WWE. Mr. T might have had the biggest impact as a celebrity in WrestleMania history. Carlos Colon I don’t really know much about but from what I heard had a big impact on Wrestling.

The next match ended with the biggest shocker of the night as we saw Brock Lesnar battle The Undertaker. The entrance the Undertaker had with every casket & the video package was awesome. First as for the match it was not the greatest & nothing close to what Taker has done the last 5-6 years at Mania. The first time watching it I feel asleep but after watching it again it was not that bad just slow & many people expect it to be slightly average match wise. The near falls were good as Taker kicked out of 2 F5 moves & the submission lock by both men was crazy. In the end Lesnar kicked out of the tombstone so Taker went for another but brock countered & hit a 3rd F5 to become the first man to defeat Undertaker at WM. BROCK LESNAR ENDED THE STREAK!!!! The reaction of everyone was perfect from Heyman laughing and being super excited to the shocked & upset faces of fans in the crowd to the silence & just clapping of the announcers. I don’t know if that was Taker’s last match but if it was the watch he took up the ramp will be remembered forever. This is a similar situation to Austin at Mania 19 when we didn’t know it was his last match until after. I am so shocked that Brock won & as I am typing I still can’t believe it. If I had to rate the match I would give it ** ½ because it was a slow match that if you watch again knowing the result it won’t feel the same as it did live.

The match that usually follows Taker’s is a tough one as the crowd is usually dead for it & this year was no exception as we had the 14 Divas Title Match. AJ Lee was the only diva that got an entrance as the rest were already in the ring after the Mania 31 video package. It was good for the 7 minutes they got as it had some cool spots like the double dives by the Bellas as well as the match starting off with all the ladies attacking AJ & Tamina. A cool spot was when Brie & Nikki were alone in the ring & Nikki hit Brie with her finisher. In the end AJ made Naomi tap out to the Black Widow as Vickie looked annoyed that AJ won. Once again the match was not bad it’s just everyone was still in shock that Taker lost. I would give it a * ½ as they tried hard but with so many people & one fall it was tough.

The Legends were all shown after this match as we saw Bob Backland, Bret Hart, Dusty Rhodes & other legends sitting in the crowd. We then had a backstage segment with Piper, Mr. Wonderful (who doesn’t look so wonderful), Mean Gene, Mr. T, and Pat Patterson & Hulk Hogan as a way to honor the main event of the first Mania. It was cool to see them all shake hands & hug.

The main event was better than it had any right to be as we saw a triple threat match for the WWE World Heavyweight Title between Batista, Daniel Bryan & Randy Orton. Rev Theory performing Orton’s theme was cool. The match went 23 minutes & had cool spots. The ref bump was predictable & it brought out HH but Bryan took care of him with a shot from the sledgehammer & a suicide dive. HHH bringing back Scott Armstrong was a surprise as well. The move of the match was when Batista power bombed Bryan through the announcer table & Orton jumped off the stairs & caught him with a neck breaker but Orton landed on a monitor & cut his back. In the end Bryan made Batista tap out to the Yes Lock to win the titles which was the right call by WWE. Bryan winning the title help lifted the crowd after they were quiet from seeing Taker lose. Like I said the match was better than I expected so I am giving it *** ¾ out of 5. The ending of the PPV with the confetti & the pyro while Bryan celebrated with his niece & sister was great as Bryan deserved it after busting his ass in WWE & all around the world for years.

Overall Mania this year was better than I expected and it goes to show you that you can have a great Mania or great PPV without CM Punk. I love the direction WWE is taking now with Bryan as champ & young stars making an impact like Wyatt & Cesaro who the future is very bright for. The match of the night was Bryan vs. HHH & Bryan was easily the star of the night. I can’t wait to see the Yes Era take control. I am so excited for RAW & going to Extreme Rules live next month. The worst match of the night was Taker vs. Lesnar that is not counting the squash. I would grade this Mania an 8 out of 10 & say it was one of the best in recent memory. Well that’s all for this week but I will be back next week. I hope you all enjoyed Mania as much as me.
