Making An Impact
With Billy James
Welcome to “Making An Impact” review for TNA Impact Wrestling. I’m Simply Sensational Billy James with the fallout from Impact Wrestling. Happy New Year as it’s the first Impact Wrestling of the year as Kurt Angle teams with Samoa Joe to take on two members of “Aces & Eights” inside a Steel Cage. After the Austin Aries vs. Bobby Roode match last week ended in a double disqualification, who will be the Number #1 Contender and face Jeff Hardy at Genesis for the TNA World Heavyweight title. Tonight we will find out who will be named the “TNA Wrestler of 2012.” Will it be “The Cowboy” James Storm, Bully Ray, Austin Aries, Bobby Roode or Jeff Hardy who is named “TNA Wrestler of 2012?” Plus tonight is the first of two qualifying X Division matches where the two winners will face each other at Genesis and the winner of that match will go on to face Rob Van Dam for the TNA X Division title that night at Genesis. Tonight will it be Kid Kash or Christian York who goes on to Genesis as they face each other tonight. Last Week, Brooke Hogan informed Bully Ray that her father, Hulk Hogan knows about their relationship. Will Hulk Hogan confront Bully Ray tonight? So let’s get started by asking yourself this one question? “Are you ready to feel the Impact?”
“The Cowboy” James Storm pins Kazarian
Christian York pins Kid Kash in an X-Division Tournament match
Hernandez defeats Joey Ryan by disqualification
Mickie James & Brooke Tessmacher beat Tara & Gail Kim
Kurt Angle & Samoa Joe defeat “Aces & Eights” in a Steel Cage match
Great, we got Hernandez vs. Joey Ryan tonight which to me was a total waste of time. It’s time for Joey Ryan to get off your ass and shows us that you actually can wrestle a match. This entire match was just a two minutes of Ryan getting his ass kicked by Hernandez which was a huge waste of time. I really think that Ryan has a good gimmick but his wrestling skills leaves a lot to be desired. So now it’s going to be a rematch at Genesis for the TNA Tag Team title as Joey Ryan & Matt Morgan challenge the Champions; Chavo and Hernandez; a match that I’m actually not looking forward to.
Does TNA really think that anybody actually cares about Joseph Park? I’m getting sick of having these damn Joseph Park “OVW” packages. TNA, for the love of God, bring back Abyss and bring him back NOW!!!!
I was curious last week to see where TNA was going Mr. Anderson and “Aces & Eights” but TNA blew it this week. What was the point of having Anderson out at ring side during the Steel Cage match and does not one thing one way or the other. All Anderson did during the whole mayhem after the Steel Cage match was just standing by ring side. I’m sure not a lot of people caught this but that’s why I’m Mr. TNA
Not a bad match between “The Cowboy” James Storm and Kazarian. I laughed my ass at Storm’s promo he cut on Bad Influence. While the match wasn’t long, it was good because Storm and Kazarian had good chemistry from working with each other when they were both members of Fortune. The running drop kick that Storm hit on Storm into the ring corner was great. I loved how Storm kicked out of the pin attempt by Kazarian after Kaz hit the Fade to Black on Storm. Christopher Daniels also got himself involved several times during the match but paid for it when Storm hit an Enzuigiri before hitting the Last Call on Kazarain for the win. Good match and a great start to 2013 for Storm.
I glad to see that TNA isn’t dropping the ball and are using Christian York on the main roster instead of sending him to OVW. I thought that his match tonight with Kid Kash was good but York’s better matches were with Jeff Hardy and Bobby Roode. I knew once the two X Division qualifying matches were going to be Kid Kash vs. Christian York for tonight, I knew York was going to win. It was cool to see York get the win by hitting Mood Swing out of nowhere on Kash. Good five minute match with York having a good showing. I look for York to face Kenny King at Genesis but we’ll have to wait and see next week to see who wins in the Kenny King vs. Xema ion.
I was not surprised one bit that Jeff Hardy won “TNA Wrestler of the Year” as the majority of the fans voted for Hardy. I’m sure there were several fans who voted for Aries but TNA pretty knew that Hardy was going to win. What made the segment great was the arrogance and arguing between Austin Aries and Bobby Roode. Aries was just great on the mic and Aries facial helped sell the segment even more. I like seeing Aries and Roode arguing and not being buddies like most “Heels” are. I just that boring and to see the heat between Aries and Roode is refreshing to see. As expected, Aries vs. Roode vs. Hardy for the TNA title is a go for Genesis.
I can’t believe that I’m saying this but I loved the Bully Ray\Hulk Hogan segment. I think Hogan actually did a good job coming across as an overbearing father who is using abusing his power as General Manager of Impact Wrestling. I think that TNA has set it up to turn Hogan into a “Heelish” GM while not new would still be interesting considering the time TNA has spent to make Bully Ray a “Face.” I look for TNA to do a big angle at Genesis with Bully Ray but I have no idea what that will be. The one thing that I’m sure of is that is when Hogan will turn full “Heel”. I will say that Brooke Hogan’s acting leaves a lot to be desired and the less she talks the better the segment will be.
What’s better then a Knockouts match, how about a Knockouts Tag Team match with Brooke Tessmacher and Mickie James taking on Gail Kim and Tara. I thought that it was great match where both sides had some great action with each woman getting decent time in the match. Brooke spent a good portion of the match being worked over by Gail and Tara. Gail was on fired hitting a Fireman’s carry gut buster on Brooke while Tara hit a nice back breaker on Brooke. The crowd was really behind Brooke and Mickie and went crazy toward the end when Mickie got the hot tag from Brooke. I was impressed by the suicide drive from the top rope onto Tara and Jesse on the outside of the ring. I think that Mickie has never looked better and that Mickie DT was awesome that got the win for Brooke and Mickie. I guess my only question is where was Velvet Sky as to me it would have made more sense for Velvet to be Mickie’s partner in order to continue following through with the seeds that TNA laid out for setting up a feud between Velvet and Mickie. So to me it didn’t sense for Brooke to be in this match but I’m complaining too much because it great to see that TNA isn’t pushing to the back.
The main event Steel Cage match was good and it did a great job of telling a story. While I found illogical for the referee to the start the match when Angle was pulled out of the cage and beaten by Doc before the match had actually started; it works because it made the crowd get behind Joe even more. I thought Joe did a great job holding his own against Devon and masked member of “Aces & Eights” while Angle was being beaten by Doc on the outside of the cage. The crowd got even more into the match when Angle was finally able to get into the cage evening the odds. I thought that it was interesting that Angle was the only one bleeding during this match despite Devon being rammed into the cage on several occasions. It made sense for Angle and Joe to win the match as all of “Aces & Eights” came into the Steel Cage beat up both Angle and Joe. The crowd went ape when Sting came down and attack “Aces & Eights” with the baseball bat. I think that it was a smart move on TNA’s part to have a member of “Aces & Eights” be unmasked who turned out to be Mike Knoxx. I’m curious to see who will be revealed as a member of “Aces & Eights”
Show Rating: 7 ½
This was a good way to start off the New Year for Impact Wrestling as we got four damn good matches. I say four good matches as I really don’t count Hernandez vs. Joey Ryan as an actual match. Most of the promo segments were good including the Bully Ray\Hulk Hogan segment which is odd to say because Hulk Hogan is boring when he cuts a promo (It’s not the 19080’s Brother!) Austin Aries and Bobby Rode were like gold playing off each other and I can’t wait for the Triple Threat match at Genesis for the TNA title. It great to see Mickie James and Brooke Tessmacher team up tonight as a tag team and they work pretty well together. If it wasn’t for the fact that the TNA Knockouts Tag Team title are worthless now, I would say put the titles on Brooke and Mickie. Christian York had another good performance and now will have his major PPV match at Genesis as he will face the winner of Kenny King vs. Xema Ion match that will happen next week. Hopefully TNA will keep things rolling next week as this week’s Impact Wrestling was damn good.
Star of the Night: Mickie James & Brooke Tessmacher
