Making An Impact
With Billy James
Welcome to “Making An Impact” review for TNA Impact Wrestling. I’m Simply Sensational Billy James with the fallout from Impact Wrestling. It’s Championship Thursday and in the main event it’s Austin Aries vs. Jeff Hardy III for the TNA title. Can Aries regain the TNA title or will Hardy beat Aries one more time? Also Kurt Angle challenges Devon for the TNA TV title. Can Angle overcome Devon and the members of “Aces & Eights”? What will Hulk Hogan have to say about the Brooke Hogan\Bully Ray situation? Also Tara defends the TNA Knockouts title against an opponent chosen by Brooke Hogan. Will it be ODB, Brooke Tessmacher, Velvet Sky or Mickie James who will face Tara for the Knockouts title? So let’s get started by asking yourself this one question? “Are you ready to feel the Impact?”
Devon pins Kurt Angle to retain the TNA TV title
Matt Morgan & Joey Ryan beat Rob Van Dam & Kenny King
Tara pins Mickie James to retain the TNA Knockouts title
Jeff Hardy pins Austin Aries to retain the TNA World Heavyweight title
Ok, the Kurt Angle vs. Devon match was average but the damn interference took away from what could have been a good match. Why didn’t more referees come down and help get everyone on the outside of the ring the back? I understand that TNA needed to the run in behind the referee’s back in order to keep the TV title on Devon without making Angle look weak. However I feel that it could have been done better. I’m sure we’ll see another Eight Man Tag Team match at Genesis between “Aces & Eights” and Angle, Bischoff, Brisco & Samoa Joe.
While I like the interaction and setup for a feud between Rob Van Dam and Kenny King but did TNA management need to put them up against Ryan & Morgan? Matt Morgan is not a bad wrestler and should be used in Singles division and not the Tag Team division. I had to laugh at the comment that Mike Tenay made during the match trying to put over Joey Ryan and Matt Morgan as a tag team. I have still yet to have been impress by Ryan’s in ring skills and wish that Ryan actually show what he can really do. I like Ryan’s promo skills and I like his gimmick but that’s it. The only good thing that came out of this match was the setup for a feud between Kenny King and RVD which I expect for them to face each other at Genesis for the TNA X Division title.
Please TNA, no more Joseph Park segments. It makes OVW look like that they can’t train wrestlers which in reality, several fine wrestlers have come out of OVW. The Joseph Park character sucks so bring back Abyss TNA.
Ok, I’m still trying to figure out what the Bad Influence Christmas segment was all about. I mean what was the point of having Santa Claus out there with Daniels and Kazarian ? The only thing that makes any sense to me is that TNA is setting up a feud between “The Cowboy” James Storm who came down during the segment when Daniels and Kazarian started running their mouths about Storm. From what I can tell, TNA is going to use this at the starting point for a feud between Storm and Styles which will be very cool.
The Mickie James vs. Tara match was the second best match of the night and both ladies were very impressive. I love it when Mickie blocked Tara’s attempt at a Jumping DDT and reverse it into a Hurricanrana. Tara was great to hitting a very impressive power slam on Mickie. Also Tara has started using a new move called Spider’s Web which is a Fireman’s carry into a swinging sidewalk slam which Mickie blocked tonight into a pin attempt. I guess the only two complains that I have is with Taryn Terrell as the referee and Jesse. Why didn’t Taryn just send Jesse to the back? I think one thing that was setup was the beginning of a feud between Mickie James and Velvet Sky which will be very interesting. I expect the Knockouts title to be involved in this feud but I don’t expect this to happen until Lockdown in March.
Aries vs. Hardy III, what a damn good match. This match went for about 20 minutes and did Hardy and Aries put on a great match. I mean each were hitting moves with the other blocking it and they kept the action at a fast pace. During this match Hardy hit an awesome move on Aries which was a high impact over-the-head-release face plant. Aries took a hard Twist of Fate during the match but bounce up and kept himself from going back down by holding the ropes. I was surprised that Bobby Roode came out toward the end of the match and hit a spine buster on Aries while the referee was out which allowed Hardy to hit the Twist of Fate and goes up top for the Swanton to get the win over Aries. I’m sure we’ll see Aries vs. Hardy IV in the near future but I can’t wait to see is where Bobby Roode is going to fit in this feud.
Couple of things that came out of some various segment that I thought deserve to get “High Impact” was Devon talking about bring in a special muscle to deal with Bully Ray. I liked the interaction between Bully Ray and Hulk Hogan which was good because there was great emotion but not as good as last week’s interaction. The ending of Impact Wrestling with Brooke Hogan making out with Bully Ray with Hulk Hogan’s reaction makes wonder what’s going to happen next.
Show Rating: 6 ¾
Ok, the first hour of Impact Wrestling was a slow start with average matches. The second hour really picked up with Mickie vs. Tara and Aries vs. Hardy. Some pieces were laid down for the start of some new feuds with the possible feuds being Storm vs. Styles, Mickie James vs. Velvet Sky and Aries vs. Roode. We also found out that Sting is returning on 1-13-13 which the date for the Genesis PPV. I thought that TNA should kept this a secret but I can understand wanting to hype Genesis. Overall not a bad episode concerning that tonight’s Impact Wrestling was taped last week. Hopefully, TNA will start building up for the Genesis PPV. Don’t forget to check back next week for the Third Annual TNA Glory Awards podcast as I and John Mayer will name the TNA Match of the Year, Superstar of the Year, Knockout of the Year and much more.
