Making An Impact
With Billy James
Welcome to “Making An Impact” review for TNA Impact Wrestling. I’m Simply Sensational Billy James with the fallout from Impact Wrestling. It’s Open Fight Night on Impact Wrestling where anyone can challenge anyone and they have to answer the challenge. Tonight Bully Ray plans to challenge his former tag team partner; Devon to a match. Will Devon answer the challenge by himself or will Devon bring backup in the form of “Aces & Eights”? Last week Austin Aries attacked the TNA Champion; Jeff Hardy after Hardy’s match and took the TNA title after informing Hardy that he’s invoking his rematch at Turning Point. What will be Hardy’s reactions to Aries’s actions? Tonight ODB plans to challenge Tara’s “boyfriend” Jeese to a match to the dismay of both Tara and Jeese. After being attacked by members of “Aces & Eights” last week, will Kurt Angle get revenge on “Aces & Eights” tonight? So let’s get started by asking yourself this one question? “Are you ready to feel the Impact?”
Samoa Joe defeats Magnus by disqualification in a non title match
Zema Ion defeats Christian York by submission in a Gut Check match
Jeese pins ODB
Jeff Hardy pins Robbie E. in a non title match
Joey Ryan pins Rob Van Dam in a non title match
Wrestling quality was way off this week as most of the matches where just average with the expectation of Xema Ion vs. Christian York. It just seems like this show far as matches go were just half ass booked. I’m not saying that they were terrible matches but they weren’t great matches either. Maybe everyone had their minds on the damage from Hurricane Sandy. The average matches made it hard to pay attention which was a little disappointing because it was Open Fight Night.
The worst match of the night by far was ODB vs. Jeese. For the most part, I hate intergender match like because the match is limited by what the TV censors will allow them to do. Even the crowd in the Impact Zone wasn’t into this match and it showed. It would have been better if TNA had done an intergender tag team with Eric Young as ODB’s partner. I can’t believe I just said that, somebody please get me some Ibuprofen stat.
Please for the love of God, can someone at TNA explain to me the logic of still keep the “Joseph Park” character? Joseph Park has to be the worst character in TNA history, worst than “Claire Lynch.” Why did TNA have Joseph Park open up Impact Wrestling with that awful segment of Joseph Park challenging members of “Aces & Eights” to a match? This was not a great way to start off Impact Wrestling and I would have rather seen Hulk Hogan open the show. That’s bad considering that Hulk Hogan isn’t that great either.
Couldn’t someone have come up with a better way to generate heat between the teams of Daniels\Kazarain and Guerrero\Hernandez? The minute that Daniels and Kazarian started talking, you knew that they were going to challenge Héctor Guerrero and Willie Urbina. What made things worst was the fact Willie Urbina just stood there while Daniels and Kazarian beat the crap out of Héctor before they beat up him. Also could someone tell Christopher Daniels that Shawn Michaels called and wants his gimmick back.
While the match wasn’t for the TNA TV title but Magnus vs. Samoa Joe was not a bad match to start Impact Wrestling off with. Their first match at Bound for Glory was good and I loved that TNA didn’t forget the history by having Magnus bring the fact that they were former tag team partners. I thought that the action was good and had no problem with the disqualification as it makes Magnus look strong while not making Joe looking weak. I look for TNA to announce Magnus vs. Samoa Joe for the TV title at Turning Point which TNA made official today.
While the Hardy vs. Robbie E match wasn’t that great, we did get more build up for the rematch between Hardy and Aries for the TNA title. Aries is just awesome when he picks up a mic as he’s one of the best talkers in TNA. Aries made a great point about being dominate since his return to TNA and was never pinned for the TNA X Division title. I also like how Aries comment about climbing ladders led to Hardy suggesting that their title match at Turning Point be a ladder match. Making it a ladder match makes things every more interesting as to the best of my knowledge, Aries has never been in a ladder match. Defiantly can’t wait to see Aries vs. Hardy II at Turning Point.
The Bobby Roode\AJ Styles segment was very good and was the perfect setup for the triple threat at Turning Point with “The Cowboy” James Storm being the third man in the match. Bobby Roode made a great point that he wrestle for the TNA title now that Aries is no longer the Champion. I like having AJ Styles throwing his hat into the title picture as he hasn’t wrestle for the TNA title in a while. Storm has already proved he deserves a title shot for the TNA title. What makes the setup for this match even more exciting in that whoever gets pinned in the triple threat match at Turing Point, will not get a title shot until Bound for Glory 2013. Also I loved Styles’s shot at the WWE, I was laughing my ass off.
Damn, I was really impressed with Christian York tonight in his match against Xema Ion. I thought that York was over with the crowd and had a great wrestling style. York did a great job selling Ion’s offense including that awesome cross arm breaker. Ion was great too as Ion sold lot of York’s offense during the match. The best match of the night in my opinion as Christian was the start of the night. TNA needs to sign York as he would be a great addition to the X Division.
While some the “Ace & Eights” segments border on being boring, we did some build up in the storyline with the unmasking of another member of the group who turned out to be Luke Gallows. I did think it was stupid however for Joseph Park to be the one to unmask Gallows. I need that Devon and Bully Ray weren’t really going to wrestle but I thought that TNA would have the match at Turning Point but today TNA announced that Kurt Angle will face Devon at Turning Point. I expect to see an eight man tag team match at Turning Point between “Aces & Eights” and Sting, Bully Ray, Garett Bischoff and Wes Brisco.
I’m glad to see that TNA is doing something with Joey Ryan after his win at Bound for Glory and becoming a permanent part of the TNA roster. The Ryan vs. RVD served its purpose and that was setting up the feud between Ryan and RVD. The cheap win by Ryan gives Ryan the right to demand an X Division title shot without making RVD looking totally weak. I’m surprised that TNA hasn’t made Joey Ryan vs. Rob Van Dam for the X Division title at Turning Point. I like the direction where TNA is going with Matt Morgan as he’s coming across as a total bad ass. I’m not sure about the whole “Hulk Hogan’s cape” thing but it’s interesting.
Show Rating: (Wrestling Quality: 3 ¾ out of 10) (Storyline Quality: 6 ½ out of 10)
Ok, from just a wrestling quality point of view, this week’s Impact Wrestling was weak. However from a storyline point of view as to building up the card for Turning Point PPV, tonight’s Impact Wrestling did a damn good job building up the card. Three matches were made after Impact Wrestling which was great to see. Christian was great in his Gut Check match and hopefully TNA will sign York to a TNA contract. I’m glad to see that AJ Styles is getting put back into the main event title picture which he deserves. Next week we’ll Bobby Roode vs. AJ Styles which should be damn good. Hopefully the rest of the action next week will good too.
Star of the Night: Christian York
